Niccol, The CEO Of Starbucks, Attracted New Customers. Next, Investors Want Larger Margins

Niccol

The first two years of Brian Niccol’s leadership at Starbucks (SBUX.O) have been a qualified success since his emphasis on marketing and store enhancements has attracted customers back to the biggest chain of coffee shops in the world.

However, the “Back to Starbucks” reorganization approach has increased expenses and reduced profits. Niccol will celebrate his second year as CEO on Wednesday. The next two years will determine if he can turn that rebound into the long-term earnings that investors are looking for.

When Niccol took over in September 2024, Starbucks had reported three straight quarters of declining comparable sales, highlighting customer discontent with lengthy wait times, ineffective promotions, and a convoluted menu.

After declining for three more quarters, sales began to climb for the fourth consecutive quarter, reaching 7.9% in the fiscal third quarter that concluded on June 28.

Niccol has placed more emphasis on customer satisfaction than on short-term profits. This approach has supported Starbucks’ decision to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in hiring more employees to shorten wait times and renovating stores to bring back the coffee shop vibe that had contributed to the company’s global success.

The approach is reminiscent to Niccol’s playbook from his prior position as CEO of Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG.N). There, he improved his standing as a brand-focused executive by admitting the chain’s flaws and boosting sales following its food safety problem.

Starbucks has prioritized marketing initiatives under his leadership, as evidenced by the company’s recent product placement in the film “The Devil Wears Prada 2”.

On the day Niccol’s hiring was revealed, shares surged 24%. Since then, they have increased by 30%, trailing the approximately 40% gain of the larger S&P 500 index but outperforming decreases at competitors like McDonald’s (MCD.N), opens new tab, and Chipotle during the same time frame.
